There is no central database of the human impact on protected areas. We are trying to build a database of the world's dams, especially for protected areas. Why?
Dams are crucial for water supply and energy generation in many
countries, yet:
- There is no definitive spatial database of dams;
- We cannot measure or model the impact of land use and climate
change on dam water supply without such a database;
- Dams form the point at which intangible water-based
environmental services become tangible. Thus they are potentially
critical in financing upstream watershed management and
conservation strategies.
Help us to define the global distribution of dams in protected
areas. More than 24,000 dams have already been contributed. Donate
some time to search a park or tile and add some more.
