Water down your lifestyle

  • Ensure taps, water pipes and hose connections don't drip.
  • Install rainwater tanks or even just a small rain barrel, these are great for gardening.
  • Turn off the tap when applying shower products, when brushing your teeth, and when shaving.
  • Wash veggies in a sink partially filled with water instead of under a running tap.
  • Water gardens just after sunrise or just after sunset to reduce evaporation.
  • Mulch gardens to reduce watering requirements.
  • Install drip irrigation systems.
  • Leave grass a little longer during summer - it will retain more moisture.
  • Insulate water pipes.
  • Install dual flush toilets or displacement devices in cisterns.
  • Never use a hose to blast leaves or litter off a driveway - sweep it, it's good exercise too!
  • Take shorter showers with less pressure. Whilst many green-tips websites recommend switching from baths to showers, this isn't always the best option, and depends on what type of shower you use.
  • Bear this in mind: A full bathtub holds approximately 140 litres of water; Standard shower heads dispense 20-60 litres of water per minute; Shower heads with flow restrictors dispense 10-15 litres of water per minute. However a power shower could flood a bath in less than five minutes! The best way to know which is more energy-efficient for you is to put the plug in the bath next time you have a shower.
  • Install a water-saving shower head for under £10. They are designed to cut water usage whilst maintaining power and comfort.
