Cutting costs in the kitchen

  • Only fill a kettle with as much water as you need. This not only saves energy, but will get your morning fix to you much quicker!
  • When boiling water for cooking, use your kettle rather than the hob - it is more energy-efficient.
  • Use your microwave where possible. Microwaves use around 33-50% less energy than a stove.
  • Ensure your oven light is working and the inspection glass is clean - significant heat will be lost if you have to open the door to check on your food.
  • Keep lids on pans as much as you can, to reduce heat loss - turn the heat down when it reaches the boil.
  • A dripping hot water tap wastes energy, and in one week wastes enough hot water to fill half a bath, so fix leaking taps and make sure they're fully turned off!
  • If you have an electric stove, always select the right pan for the job and for the hob size.
  • When cooking on a stove or a range top; you can switch it off just before your food is done. There will be enough heat to finish the cooking.
  • Warm the plates in the oven as it cools down after your food has cooked.
  • Check your fridge to ensure the seal is in good condition; even small gaps can affect performance dramatically. Your fridge should also be situated out of direct sunlight and have good air circulation; particularly at the back.
  • Regularly defrosting your fridge and freezer will help to conserve electricity.
  • Account for seasons when it comes to your fridge - it can usually be switched to a warmer setting during winter.
  • Next time you get the vacuum cleaner out - give your fridge a treat and save money. Run the cleaner gently over the coils on the back of the fridge to remove the dust. The motor will run for shorter periods and save you cash.
  • Avoid putting warm food in the fridge, always let it cool down first, and don't put uncovered food in the fridge - the moisture released makes the fridge work harder.
  • Defrost food in the fridge overnight rather than microwaving it.
