Conserve your computer

  • When you're not using your computer for extended periods, switch it off at the wall.
  • Ensure your power saving / management options are enabled and properly configured. In Windows, this can be found in Settings / Control Panel / Power Options. Sometimes switching from 'high performance' or 'balanced' power options to 'power saver' not only stops your computer over-heating and playing up, but will save you money, electricity, and also reduce environmental damage.
  • Only have your screen as bright as you need it. Unnecessarily bright screens will use additional electricity and may also damage your eyes over sustained periods.
  • For a screen saver, use a blank (black) screen as animated screen savers are energy suckers.
