The 9th Erith Air Explorer Scout Group opened and organised an empty shop and distributed 'Books for Free' to the local community.
A Scout Group aged between 13 and 17; from South East London
have done a fantastic job helping the local community of
Basildon. In conjunction with Healthy Planet, the 9th Erith
Air Explorer Scout Group opened and organised an empty shop and
distributed 'Books for Free' to the local community.
Prior to attending the shop the individuals participated in an
evening of activities aimed at developing their business skills for
example persistence, teamwork, negotiation and presentation
skills. This included a 'Dragons Den' task where the teams
had to reinvent a brick and a toilet roll in a bid to win deals
from the 'dragons' judging them. This in turn prepares the
individuals for their day in the shop, thinking about the best
approach to customers.
On the day in the shop the young people were responsible for
displaying all the stock, arranging posters to promote both the
Scouts and Healthy Planet, encouraging customers into the store and
helping them where possible. This unique collaboration has
given the young people exposure to the business sector that may not
otherwise get until they are older. It demonstrates their
capabilities and develops their skills in a fun and exciting way
whilst helping to save the environment.
