Healthy Planet attended the Phoenix Summer Fayre this past Saturday with great success, as we gave away close to 500 books in just a few hours, and taught over 60 children how to plant their own lettuce seeds with donated compost from the Phoenix Farm!
"Free books!? Free seed planning?! Woo-hoo!" This shout of
excitement was heard throughout the day as children of all ages
passed by the Healthy Planet stall at the Phoenix Summer Fayre last
Saturday. The event was a huge success, as we gave away close
to 500 books in just a few hours, and taught over 60 children how
to plant their own lettuce seeds with donated compost from the
Phoenix Farm.
Keeping with the theme of donated goods, Healthy Planet received
a generous donation of fruit and veg from the Hammersmith Farmers
Market, which was then used to give away to kids to encourage
healthy eating. We also used the opportunity to promote a new
pilot programme called Healthy Growing, in which a business adopts
a class, then together that class and business adopt a community
garden, in which they donate time and money to develop and maintain
the garden. The aim is to teach kids the importance of
healthy lifestyles and business skills for the future.
The day was packed with activities such as guessing the number
of blueberries in a jar, matching food ingredients to its origin
(i.e. chicken and chips come from a farm, not the shop), seed
sowing, and learning how many laps you need to run to burn calories
for different foods.
A big thanks to Healthy Planet's Intern, Jenna Smith for all of
her hard work prior to the event and on the day of, as well as
staff from Phoenix High School, specifically Marcia Clack,
Denise Hogan, Cathy Maund, and Brandina Morrison.
