What the children gained
The children spent the half-term studying the culture
& wildlife of Mexico. The whole process made them more aware of
global issues such as povery, deforestation & the impact of the
connection between people, animals & the environment. By taking
the initiative to do something about it, they also learned many
valuable life skills.
Healthy Learning uses NASA images & Google technology
to bring children closer to these seemingly far away, unconnected
places by letting them choose a protected park and plot to adopt in
their name.
Classroom Enquiry Based Learning:
- Knowledge of global societies and local traditions.
- Comparing where we live to other places.
- Conservation of the planet and its resources.
- Citizenship (PSHE).
Outside Classroom, Practical Learning:
The children decided to run their own stall at the school€™s
summer fair to raise enough money in order to adopt a plot of land. The
children nearly doubled their £180 target, by making a profit of
nearly £300. Throughout the weeks, the children learned:
- Planning and preparation to organise and run their own
shops. For example, assigning a shift rotation for the children to work
the stall.
- Making the items for sale, including Mexican cuisine, mini-sombreros
and other cultural object
- Work responsibility
- Counting and handling money
- Engaging and attracting people and customers

What parents and teachers had to say
Both parents and teachers were pleased with the students€™
enthusiasm and impressed by their initiative - they were the only class
to hold their own shop at the fair.
"The children loved learning about Mexico, and when they found
out about the destruction of rainforests and the threat this caused to
the animals that lived there, they wanted to help. They learnt that
deforestation, no matter where it is, is everyone€™s problem and
responsibility.€
€œThey got really excited at the prospect of having a plot of
protected land and wildlife in Mexico that they can call their own.€
Liz Ryan, Year 2 Teacher (& Stall Stock Manager!).
The children are choosing their plot, and the School Council will
decide how to spend the grant from Healthy Planet.
How long it took:
Healthy Learning is flexible. It can be compacted into one
session plus outside classroom activities, or become the centrepiece of
an entire course (Lutterworth
College's 6th Form Citizenship course).
St. Peter's spread the learning across most the summer term.
First half of summer
term: The class learns about Mexico, its
geographical features and compares it to where we live.
Second half of summer
term:
Week 1: Class decides to support Mexico€™s
wildlife.
Week 2:
Brainstorm & decide to run their own Mexican stall at the Fair.
Weeks 3-5: Making
mini-sombreros, Aztec Masks, Maracas, God€™s Eyes
Week 6: Set
prices; create stall displays; set staff rota for all the children;
make food/drink and finally, run the €˜Adult-free€™ stall.
Week 7: Count
money and profit made. Receive special badge & star.
Grants for Schools & Other Benefits
When
a school adopts land, we automatically set aside a large chunk,
exclusively for that school as a grant fund to invest in health and
environmental education. For example, on a £180 plot adopted for a
year, the school can receive a grant of approx. £80, or can opt for
Healthy Planet to invest that donation. A further £80 is always set
aside for your chosen park. Simply email learning@healthyplanet.org
describing how your school will improve the sustainability &
health of our planet & children with the grant. Learn more about Grants.
